Merino wool, straight from the sheep, is finely crimped and very soft. It’s typically used in high-end, high-performance athletic gear. It’s the preferred fabric because it absorbs up to one-third of its weight in water, keeping you drier. Unlike cotton, it keeps you warm even when damp. The naturally occurring lanolin has antibacterial properties. Merino wool is warmer than other wools because the finer fibers have dead air spaces, so it traps body heat.
